Internet Stats, Website Traffic Data

Morning updates in the office of Sharp Instinct Studio
This Website

JayFisher.com started simply enough in the mid 1990s. I wanted it to be a place where a client could go, learn about me and my knives, see plenty of pictures and descriptions of my work, and maybe purchase what interests him. It's become so much more than that. This website eclipsed what I was doing at shows, venues, and even through the doors of my professional store front, Sharp Instinct Studios. JayFisher.com had not only taken on a life of its own, it became my sole venue, where I do all my business, my professional business pathway to the world, and my client's pathway to me. Currently, nearly all my business comes through the website.

Though there were times when website traffic boomed, it was not because of some major event, but because of what you see in the photo above. Every day I work on the site a bit, building, adding, improving, structuring, and editing. In mid-2008 I had to start completely rebuilding my website from the ground up. This is because the internet is going to standards compliance, accessibility, XHTML language, and CSS style layouts. For most of you, this is Greek, but I've got to keep the site up to modern standards, since it is my livelihood. What you'll see from my efforts is a better site with cleaner code, faster downloads, and a nice new look.

I'll never stop working on the site, as new knives and projects are added. Hopefully, every time a client or knife aficionado or enthusiast visits, he'll find something new.

Website traffic patterns

I started logging some brief notes when traffic stats started dramatically changing:

  • In October, 2005, www.jayfisher.com started to boom. I don't know why, perhaps the popularity of my work, or the efforts I had made to expand and clarify the web site was starting to gain interest. Back then, it was averaging about 5000 hits a day. I had to laugh at our local newspaper, the Clovis News Journal, when they reported that their website was the "busiest in the area" at over 90,000 hits a month. Even back then, I was averaging 150,000 hits a month. I didn't bother to set them straight, but I found it amusing.
  • Written 01DEC06: This web site started gaining momentum and about a thousand hits a day per month, for about six months, then it started increasing. Now I'm gaining 5000 to 6000 hits a day per month! As of this writing, the site is running about 30,000 hits a day, or 915,000 hits a month! These are not just web bots or spiders cruising for email addresses, or just because the site has a lot of words, therefore scores high in search engines. At the time of this writing, nearly three fourths of visitors are bookmarking this site as one of their favorites, intending to return again and again. And they do. My goal is to have the best single knifemaker website on the internet.
  • Written 01APR07: I topped 1 million hits last month! That's an average of over 34,000 hits a day! The actual number was 1,062,515. That's a lot of web traffic. It's funny, I still get people and companies emailing me wanting to help me promote my web site on the internet! Yeah, right, I need more traffic! Right now, my order list is getting longer and longer, and longer... all I can ask is that my clients have great patience. It's taken a lot of years to build this site, and I'm thankful to all of you who contribute your time, effort, and hard-earned money to invest in my knives, my information, and take the time to cruise this website! You are the reason I'm here!
  • Written 19DEC07: The website traffic continues to grow. There's just no stopping this juggernaut! Last month, I averaged 47,000 hits a day, I'm nearing the 1.5m Hits per month mark!  People are asking how they too, can benefit from this fantastic internet experience, and I'm helping a few choice friends, and writing a good deal about it in my book, hopefully coming soon! I'm gonna have to buy more bandwidth...
  • Written 02JAN08: Last year was a fantastic year for the website. Traffic has increased from 29,000 hits per day in DEC06 to 51,000 hits per day in DEC07. I keep thinking that traffic will level off, but I don't think that's the trend. The 1.5m hits/month mark? Blew right through it. I'll be very interested to see what happens this year!
  • Written 28JAN08: AAAAAKKK! I've run out of bandwidth! Extremely high site traffic (no kidding) pushed my bandwidth use up very high, so my server just shut the site down... grrr. My server did not warn me about this, though they told me they sent out several emails... to my email address from 10 years ago! So we've updated this beast of a web site and we'll see if you guys can crash it. Because they thought they warned me (but, in fact, did not) my site came down about 11:00 AM 28JAN08 and stayed down until 5:00 PM MST. But I'm up and running again! It must have been that traffic on Friday, January 25, 2008. I had just under 98,000 hits ... in that one day! That's not a lot of traffic for a huge company or discussion forum, but for a one man show, that's pretty amazing!
  • I had to buy more bandwidth...
  • Written 01JUN08: Finally, traffic seems to have leveled off. It was very high in March, over 67k hits a day, and now it's tapered down to about 50k. I think the big gas scare and inflation has taken its toll on the internet cruisers. Maybe knife makers and beginners (a large chunk of traffic) have received all the info they need, or maybe they have decided it's not safe in today's economy to enter the market and compete with established makers. In any case, orders and inquiries have NOT tapered off, they are stronger than ever. I'm still very deep in orders, and have some fantastic new and exciting projects in the pipeline!
  • Written June 2009: Website traffic has leveled off to about 2 million hits a month. At the time of this writing, I'm about halfway through the website rebuild. I've seen improvements in traffic with every page I update to the new language, code and format, so we'll see what happens after the update is complete.
  • Written October 2009: September 09 was a great month! The website rebuild, about two thirds finished, must be taking effect. Hits to the site jumped an average of 7000 hits a day this month. As I'm cleaning up the code and eliminating the bots, I'm also enlarging the photos for better illustration of my work. This does not seem to be slowing traffic at all.
  • Written January 2010: 2009 was a super year for the site, and December did not disappoint, breaking over three million hits in the month, with many days topping 100,000 hits a day. some of this is bound to be pre-Christmas holiday shopping traffic, but I said that last year and then watched as springtime continued to see the traffic grow. As you can see from last January, that is when I ran out of bandwidth and crashed the site. Though there is still plenty of talk about the economy and difficulties, orders continue to pile up. The website rebuild is nearing the end, as I have over 200 pages finished, and about 50 to go. It's been a tedious process but fruitful and the feedback about the site has been great. I'm looking forward to 2010!
  • Written July 2010: The highest traffic month of this year so far was January which topped 3 million hits. Web traffic has been declining since then. I believe this is due to several reasons. The general reason is the economy. Many people simply can not afford fine knives, and their interest has diminished. A more singular reason is probably the knife forums, bulletin boards, and networks. I discontinued posting and membership on these public sites due to time constraints last year, so referral traffic from them has declined. In many ways, a decline in traffic is a blessing, as I'm already four to five years in orders, and new ones continue to roll in. While general traffic on the site has decreased, my knife orders are way up!
  • Written August, 2010: Most really good sites can claim that 50%, 70%, or even 80% of visitors bookmark the site in their favorite folders. Imagine my surprise when I saw that my web site stats have noted that exactly 100% of new visitors to the site bookmark this site as one of their favorites, determined to return and visit it often. These are thousands of new visitors every day from all over the world! I know of no other site that can claim this, and it's a striking, positive indication that I'm on the right track in my service to our trade here at JayFisher.com. Thanks for all your support, interest, and knife orders!
  • Written January, 2011: Though the inquiries and orders continue to grow, web site traffic has dropped somewhat. This is because of the major web rebuild wrapping up in the early months of this year. I've had to restructure and change most of the file names on the site, because the old naming process was becoming confusing and unworkable. So, older links that resided on other sites were returning "Page Not Found" errors in people's browsers. It will probably take a year to see this stabilize back to a reliable visitor and hit count. I include this explanation for the issue:
New! If you've had one of my pages listed in your favorites of your browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, etc, or if you are coming to the site from a link I sent you, and are receiving "Page Not Found" errors, please do not worry. The names of the pages on the site have had to be renamed, as part of the site restructuring and upgrade. If you make it here, you can get anywhere on the site, and a good place to start is my Home Page or my Table of Contents page. Sorry for any inconvenience, and once this is finished the page names will never change again! More details here.
  • Written March, 2011: In March of 2011, I finally had enough of my old server, and they could not deliver reliable downloading and uploading of my web site. I had numerous problems over the last several years, and it was starting to effect how clients and people were viewing the web site. I wanted to add some upgrades and new capabilities, and that just wasn't happening with my old server, and they could not help. So, in early March 2011, I moved my site to a newer, more modern, more professional server. This was a lot more effort than most people realize, but it's finally done. This will allow me a better site, more professional delivery and even some add-ons that will be coming in the future. It's exciting now to see how the site will be able to grow!
  • Written December 2013: I haven't commented a while on this page, as the site has been running consistently and well. I'm currently averaging over 3 million hits a month, and over 30,000 new visitors every month! Three fourths are new, and one fourth of visitors are returning. No matter of all the talk of the economy, jayfisher.com is still a big player in the knife game, and will continue to be one of the top websites in the field. No other singular knifemaker can make that claim, and I've worked very hard to get here. The site has over 520 pages and 15,000 photos, and continues to grow, thanks to you, the viewer. I appreciate that!

Internet Keyphrases and Search Terms

Here's a list of search terms from only one month. In this particular month, there were over 6700 individual phrases (Keyphrases) that people entered into search engines that ultimately led them to my site. Only the first thousand are listed. Wouldn't you like to know what the other 5757 phrases are?

These are by no means the only way to get to my site nor the most frequent; there dozens of other ways. I thought you might find it interesting, even amusing, the phrases people type into their search engines. Most of them are appropriate to my site, but some are downright bizarre. Look also, at how many people (in the "Search" column) actually used these terms. Sometimes the same term will come from several people and different search engines. In the percentage column, the site data analysis program stops registering below 0.1%, so it shows a zero.

Every month is different, and I try to choose an interesting phrase to go on the stats table on my home page. Some of the weird ones in this particular monthly listing? How about the word false which four people typed into a search engine and were somehow guided to my site? Or the number 115 which led three people here? And the phrase troll drawings that led two people here?

Most of the phrases are appropriate, but some bend the mind. How about two people who are looking for texture glow knife handles, or the two that want a tactical mirror? Can you imagine someone who might want both, some kind of glowing knife handle and a tactical mirror to gaze at himself while carrying it in combat? Probably the best is near the bottom of the list of this first thousand. The interested party typed into his search engine: cheapest legend of zelda link s master sword made of metal and belt free shipping. Yes, free shipping is important these days if you're going to get a legend of Zelda sword... now who is Zelda again?

The top search engine? Google, of course.
