This differs from my kits of the past, where two or three sizes of hex wrenches are needed. I've tuned up the fastener set so that, in this particular style of knife sheath, only one hex wrench (Allen wrench) is needed for all of the fasteners: 3/32". Also necessary is a simple flat bladed screwdriver (not included) to make up all of the typical hardware arrangements.

  • Knife: This is one of my toughest, most aggressive and durable knives made for counterterrorism, combat, rescue, emergency response, hazardous disaster response, and survival. It's made with an incredibly wear-resistant and tough stainless powder metal technology tool and die steel, CPMS30V. This is a tremendously heavy-duty and useful survival, combat, emergency response, and crisis-curing knife and accessory package, with a blade steel that has impeccable performance characteristics. Taranis is named for the Celtic mythological god of thunder. The combination of thick, high alloy steel, incredible heat treatment, a large and broad blade, and a powerful and protective handle, this knife is a big player in my modern combat, tactical, rescue, survival and disaster response knives.
    • Blade Steel Alloy: The Taranis blade excels in CPMS30V, a very special hypereutectoid, high alloy stainless tool steel, made by the Crucible Particle Metallurgy (CPM) process. This process creates an unparalleled alloy mixture, as the metal is atomized and sprayed into billet (bar) form with no segregation of alloy components, and absolutely uniform distribution of the alloys. This also allows a higher alloy percentage than traditional steel making processes. In this particular steel, there are four significant alloys that work together to make an extremely wear-resistant steel with high toughness and corrosion resistance. First, there is carbon, at 1.45 percent, allowing significant hardening and forming of carbides. The second is chromium, and at 14 percent, it's a true stainless steel with high corrosion resistance. The third and most effective is vanadium. CPMS30V has 4% vanadium, allowing a very high concentration of vanadium carbide particles, which are extremely wear resistant. CPMS30V also has a good percentage (2%) of molybdenum, which makes this steel very tough, resistant to breakage, even at a high hardness, as well as creating very hard molybdenum carbides. These four alloy elements combine to form very hard vanadium carbides and chromium carbides, particles so hard that typically a diamond is preferred to sharpen this blade effectively.
    • Heat Treatment: This Taranis has my T3 heat treatment, yielding an astounding blade in incredible condition through advanced processing protocols. How advanced is this treatment? It's a multi-stage cryogenic treatment, involving temperatures ranging in over 2000°F (1090°C) to -320°F (-196°C). The process is an evolution of my advanced heat treating processes, and consists of 33 dedicated and specific steps and takes 172 hours! This means that just to heat treat this blade takes over a week! The reason for this is scientific and critical, but yields the most stable, most wear-resistant, most durable and long-lived structure of this steel, profuse with fine multi-element carbides and a uniform and unbelievably robust structure. This is a testament to my determination to make the very best knives, steels, treatments and kits in the modern world. I know of no one else who has advanced the treatment to this level; it's unheard of in the metals field.
    • Blade Design: This is a blade that should cut aggressively for many years with little sharpening, and is one of the most wear resistant, highly tough stainless blades made. I made the Taranis with a wide blade, with deep hollow grinds with plenty of spine thickness, a meaty substantial piece of geometry that will assure high durability, no matter the situation or crisis. I was determined that the blade have a strong spine, with excellent matching hollow grinds leading to a razor keen single bevel cutting edge. I included three inches of my hammerhead serrations for ripping through tough materials, combining hollow ground and chisel ground geometries for a aggressive cutting action with little hanging or snagging. For traditional edge, I made sure there is plenty, at 5 1/2 inches of standard hollow ground tanto blade in front, razor-sharp. This is a big, long, nearly 9" blade, a blade size that bridges the gap between my tactical knives and survival beasts, boasting a shape, size, and material that can handle both. I created a two thirds-length top swage on the spine for reduced cross sectional thickness without sacrificing strength, and I fully hand-fileworked the blade and tang with a bold, deep, noticeable pattern around the curvy full tang which is tapered for balance. I media-blasted the blade to offer a non-glare finish that holds wax well, aiding in corrosion resistance and maintenance. The blade is treated with my "Ghost Slate" process to darken, reduce glare, and have a muted presence, while matching the rest of the darkened kit of my "Shadow Line."
    • This is an extreme use, high wear resistance, highly tough, and very large stainless steel blade with advanced heat treatment.
    • Bolsters: I bolstered this Taranis with my signature zero-care high nickel, high chromium 304 austenitic stainless steel bolsters, contoured and rounded for comfort of the hands, and shaped and radiused in the front face for easy cleaning. They are attached with multiple through-tang pins of 304 stainless steel, and are permanent as well as extremely corrosion resistant. This is the same steel used for stainless steel nuts, bolts, and fasteners, and the bolsters are heavy, thick, and solid, giving great balance to the knife. The rear bolster is extra large, for meaty reinforcement, and has an extra large chamfered 3/8" through-tang lanyard hole for added security when working elevated or over water or debris. The bolsters are dovetailed to create a solid, seamless union with the handle material. The bolsters cover substantial quillons; this handle design is created to offer an extremely safe grip by virtue of the large quillons preventing the hand from sliding forward onto the blade, or rearward off the butt of the handle. This is one of the most guarded and protective handle shapes I make on any knife, and the bolsters play the most important role, strengthening the quillons. The bolsters are also treated in my "Ghost Slate" shadow line for reduced glare and matching the rest of the knife and gear.
    • Handle Material: The scales for this knife are zero-care G10 fiberglass/epoxy composite, in Black, bedded to the tang and locked under the bolster dovetails and secured with six 1/8" 304 stainless steel pins. This is a hard, tough, and colorfast handle material, with toothy fiberglass surface that grips the hand, with no maintenance. The swell in the handle thickness creates bold eyes while the overall belly and curves of the handle creates a secure grip.
    • Balance and Feel: This is a superior, robust, weighty knife, made for the the most challenging uses, in a substantial geometry and powerful weight. The knife is comfortable in either forward or reverse grip style, and the front and rear quillons lock the hand into the handle with absolute unsurpassed security. The balance point is at the front of the forefinger location, and the thumb is comfortably drawn to the thumb rise for great control. For a large knife, it feels reasonably light and incredibly solid and formidable.
  • Leather/Buffalo Inlaid Sheath: I've included a heavy, tough, and solid leather sheath for the Taranis, in 9-10 oz. leather shoulder, hand-carved and inlaid with Buffalo (Bison) skin. The leather is shoulder, from mature cows, and is twice as thick as most other knifemakers use. The sheath design covers the blade all the way past the front bolsters, and the top flap covers the handle and secures the knife in the sheath with a double-snap assembly. The snaps are blackened stainless steel to prevent any corrosion concerns. The sheath has a high back, to protect the wearer, and the orientation is right side edge back. There is a large belt loop, double-row stitched with heavy nylon for strength and moisture and rot resistance. The sheath is dyed black, sealed throughout, with buffed edges in an acrylic water resistant satin finish. In this sheath, I inlaid six large panels of buffalo (or bison) skin in medium brown, an extremely tough and durable raised-panel design. Leather is irreplaceable in extremely cold or hot environments, and where absolute silence is needed in tactical operations with no clicking when in contact against objects, people, or gear. This is as tough a sheath as possible in leather and buffalo, with a great security flap retention.
  • Locking Sheath: The locking sheath (Version 2.0) I've made for this kit is a professional assembly, and frankly, the best tactical sheath and accessory package made in the world. It's also an example of my commitment to making the finest combat tactical, and rescue knives and sheaths on the planet. It starts with double thickness (.125") kydex (methyl acrylate and polyvinylchloride), hot-formed over an aluminum welt frame of 5052 high strength corrosion resistant aluminum alloy in H32 hardness. The high alloy aluminum I've anodized and permanently dyed black, creating an near-ceramic hard coating 1 mil thick on the surface of all of the aluminum, inside and outside of the metal, whether exposed or not. This brings the aluminum to its highest, most durable condition. Even my dying procedure for the anodizing uses sunlight-stabilizing surface sealing for the greatest colorfastness of the hardened surface. The body and welts are secured with media-blasted and slotted 304 stainless steel Chicago screws for the ultimate in durability with no care and no glare, all blackened to match with a passive oxide surface.
    Locking, Version 2.0: The sheath is an evolution of my locking sheaths, one with fewer parts, a more durable mechanism, more protected from the elements, and stronger than my earlier models (Version 1.0). In upgrading the V1.0 design, I've moved from 7 individual parts (in the locking mechanism) to 3. I've also moved from 8 machine screws to only 2! This has resulted in a sleek, smoother profile of the sheath, with increased durability! Though I've never had one single problem with any of my hundreds and hundreds of Version 1.0 sheaths I've made for over 20 years, this new sheath is smoother, lighter, slicker, and more durable. All of the components are waterproof, with all stainless steel locking mechanism for the ultimate in reliability and trustworthiness. The spring is a simple 6AL4V titanium leaf spring, for incredible corrosion resistance and strength. The locking pivot is built into the sheath welts, just like the earlier version, but with no internal springs or retaining plates, and no external hinge assembly. Just like Version 1.0, The V2.0 sheath can be worn in any position, even upside down when worn with the die-formed high alloy aluminum belt loops, straps, or clamps. I've retained the standard spacing for all the gear, so the belt loops can be located in multiple positions along the welt frame and are reversible for a variety of wear options. This spacing also allows the array of my sheath accessories to mate with and locate in multiple positions along the welts, and allows the knife to be mounted to virtually any gear in any position! All previous gear and accessories will still work with this latest sheath.
  • Sternum Harness Plus: The sternum harness I've included is the result of input from my military and counterterrorism clients. It allows the knife to be worn, handle down, angled across the sternum, on top of any other tactical gear. This harness is made of polypropylene and stitched with polyester for rot-free, high strength longevity, and the buckles and straps are tough Acetyl plastic with 110 lbs. breaking strength. The harness can be donned and doffed quickly and simply, and the "plus" is the additional one-inch wide stabilizing strap and buckle that creates an "X" strap around the torso, to prevent movement in any position of the wearer.
  • LIMA Emergency Lamp (Lamp Independent Mount Assembly): An important lesson I learned from my military and counterterrorism clients is the addition of the emergency lamp. The LIMA is a special socket in thick and wide polypropylene stitched with polyester for durability and rot resistance, and it accommodates the latest small lamp, the LED ThruNite Ti3. This little light puts out an incredible 120 lumens and at lower levels can last for 115 hours. It can reach out 164 feet and give you enough light to get to safety, and the entire assembly is extremely lightweight and waterproof to continual immersion. It even has an emergency strobe at high illumination that will get noticed. The LIMA webframe is secured with a lightweight anodized aluminum strap and stainless steel machine screws and mounts anywhere along the sheath welts where I have the standard 2.5" spacing. The retaining strap rings are also 304 stainless, and the 1/8" shock cord is easily replaceable if needed, and replacement shock cord is included. More about the LIMA on this dedicated page.
  • Horizontal Belt Loop Plates: Answering the call of my counterterrorism and military clients, I've included a pair of horizontal belt loop plates for this knife sheath. These bolt onto either side of the sheath using included hardware, and are 5052H32 high strength corrosion resistant aluminum alloy, completely anodized and permanently dyed black with a near-ceramic hard surface. They are welded for durability, and light weight. They allow horizontal wear of any belt up to 1.5" wide, and the sheath runs inline with the belt.
  • Flat strap plates (horizontal and/or vertical): These have several uses: one is to mount the knife sheath rigidly clamped to the sternum harness, with no play. They also allow the sheath to be clamped on any gear (like PALS webbing) with a solid strap security and no sliding around (like on traditional belt loops). So they clamp the sheath to your gear with all stainless steel hardware. They accommodate any web strap up to over 2" wide. They are also 5052 H32 high strength, corrosion-resistant aluminum alloy, anodized with a permanent black color, and a near-ceramic hard surface.
  • High and Low-profile belt loops (footman's loops): I've included two pairs of anodized aluminum belt loops, one pair that accommodates 1.5" wide belts up to .250" thick and one pair that accommodates 1.5" wide belts up to .190" thick. They work with the integrated spacing so can be mounted in a variety of positions on the reversible sheath.
  • Lanyards, hardware, tools: The included paracord sliding noose lanyard can be critical and necessary for retention of your knife when working in elevated locations or in marine environments. It's an adjustable sliding paracord type, a frequent request by my tactical combat professionals. I've also included a SCUBA rated waterproof lanyard with silicone rubber abrasion resistant sleeve and locking squeeze slide for adjustment. I've included all the tools, hardware, and necessary components to mount all or any combination of these accessories with your gear, on your person, and all of the hardware is blackened, non-reflective stainless steel in common American Standard Sizes. Included is screw top and snap tins for hardware storage. Also included is an archival engraved acrylic tag detailing the components with contact information. Instructions for the individual components are also included, as well as a list of video links that explain how to set up every single one of them. This is an ultimate system, and demonstrates my commitment to actual combat, tactical, field, rescue, and counterterrorism knife service in my trade.
  • Leather Sheath Storage: I've included my black denim embroidered drawstring bag with this kit (see photos below). This is to store the leather sheath; it breathes and keeps the sheath from being scuffed or abraded, and I make these in heavy denim stitched with polyester, I embroider one side with "Jay Fisher Knives" and the other with my maker's mark. The drawstring is polyethylene and it keeps the sheath protected and clean even while in the duffle (next).
  • Heavy 9" x 12" Duffle: It's important to keep everything together, safe, and accessible, and I couldn't find any duffle heavy and stout enough for the job, so I make these too. I make them in 1000 Denier Cordura® ballistic nylon, coated on the inside with polyurethane for water resistance. This is some of the heaviest, toughest material available, and I've double-row stitched all of the seams with strong, waterproof, sunlight-resistant heavy polyester thread. I've attached strong metal #8 zippers and double pulls, and reinforced the zipper ends and 2" wide polyethylene carry straps. I've even included a 7mm thick closed-cell foam inner base pad, wrapped in 600 Denier Cordura nylon in the bottom to prevent abrasion and wear. You can store paperwork and other items in the base bag. The duffle is identified with my "Quality Without Compromise" patch. Because many of my clients have more than one knife, I've also include an embroidered knife name patch, which is removable and secured by hook and loop so knife owner can tell which duffle stores which knife.
